A Message from our Teasurer re:Cheques

Several of you have inquired lately as to the status of your cheques for meets, citrus and clothing orders, fees, etc.

Please note that all cheques are deposited on the 1st of the month.  If cheques are not received by me before this date, they are then deposited at the earliest possible date which may be the 1st of the following month.   The deposit for January 1st will include all cheques made payable to FAST and will be deposited January 1st.

I also would like to take this opportunity to advise that it is our policy to charge NSF fees of $25 per returned item.  If for whatever reason you would like me to hold your cheque(s), please be sure to notify me.  I would rather see a cheque held back for a week or two, rather than returned by the bank.

Christmas Party Reminder

Hello Fast Families,

Just another reminder about the Christmas Party on Saturday.  For anyone who has not
replied yet; I am going to put in a special request.  We are in need of juice and main
dishes.  So, if any Fishes and/or Fishes Advance are planning to attend and have not
yet replied, it would be nice if you could bring juice of juice boxes.  For anyone AG1,
AG2 and National, the main dish does not have to be a "breakfast casserole" as such.  It
can be any dish you would like to bring.

Christmas Party

Hello FAST Families,

Just a reminder to the upcoming Christmas Breakfast.  I have had replies from many
families, but would love to hear from everyone.

We have booked the Willie O'Ree Community Room for Saturday morning December 20,
from 9:00am 'til noon.
We have decided on a pot luck breakfast/brunch with each group
bringing one part of the meal (see below).  The cost will be $5.00 for a parent and
one swimmer or $10.00 for three or more.  This will pay for the room rental and all
money left will go to a charity, such as the Food Bank or Soup Kitchen, perhaps for the
purchase of turkeys and other Christmas items.  We are open to any suggestions.

Each swimmer is asked to bring the following to contribute to the meal:

Fishes - juice/juice boxes and granola bars
Fishes Advance - yogurt and cream cheese
Novice 2 and Teen Fitness- bagels and muffins
Novice 1 - croissants and sweet breads
AG3 - fruit/fruit trays
AG2,AG1 and National - Breakfast casseroles

This will definitely be a fun party for everyone and a great team building event.

Please let me know if you are coming and what you will bring.  That
way we won't have too much of one thing and not enough of another. I can be reached at
459-1974 or email emartin@unb.ca.

Thank you in advance for making this a great party and I look forward to hearing from
everyone.

Fishes and Fishes Advance

Hi

Just a quick note to remind the FAST fish families that tonight is the last scheduled practice. Most of you have re-registered at this point. There are a few spots left in each of the fishes and fishes advanced if your child is still interested and you missed registration.

I also have some names on my list that indicated they were coming back but I have not received payment yet.

After tonight we will open up registration to new swimmers. To re-register you will not need to fill out more forms or complete the online registration as this is already done. Just send me an email and leave payment with your coach or Marta (head coach).

Practice Cancellation Plan

Hi Folks,

As many of you may already be aware, old man winter is starting to roar again this year. The old plan for practice cancellation coordinating with school closure will not be work for swimmers with an early morning practice. We are in the water before the School Districts have announced their plans.

The plan for announcing morning practice cancellations is that Marta will post a note on the FAST website latest news section (http://frederictonaquanauts.blogspot.com/ ) before 5:30 am if the road conditions are such that she is not able to drive to the pool in the morning. As always, each parent must use their own discretion with regards to driving in inclement weather to the pool.

Happy Winter,
Heather

Message from FAST President

To All FAST Families;

I take this opportunity to commend our Head Coach Marta for preparing such an informative FAST newsletter.  I also thank Ron Richards and Sarah MacIntyre from Enbridge Gas for putting it together.

This newsletter is a great form of communication that will promote team spirit.  This brings it all together - it gives a better picture of the entire FAST team.  It promotes good habits such as attendance, stroke technique, nutrition, ... which are critical to success. Most importantly, swimmers at all levels are being recognized - this is exciting for the swimmers and will foster positive energy and will lead to better results.

After reading it myself, I felt a sense of "team".

Great job Coach Marta!  Thanks!

Michel Losier
FAST President

By the way, we raised just over $2,000 this past weekend at our Canadian Tire Fundraiser.  Thanks to all swimmers and parents who participated.  Special thanks to Ron Richards and Julie MacDonald for helping to organize the event.

Christmas Party Plans

Good Morning FAST Families,

The Christmas Breakfast is quickly approaching (Dec. 20) and there are a few things left
to do.  First, if anyone has a Karaoke machine they would be willing to bring to the
party that would be great.  Also, we need volunteers.  We need people to help set up
tables for the party and a different group for clean up afterwards.   And what would a
Christmas party be without Santa Claus?  We definitely want Santa to come, so could I
please have a volunteer to wear the Santa suit.  The requirements are minimal;  round
face, nose like a cherry and a big belly that shakes like a bowl full of jelly.

Please let me know as soon as possible how you can help.

Where is the snow?

Lost Items

Hi Foks,

We have had a number of items go missing in the locker rooms before, during and or after practices. Coach Marta has asked that swimmers and their parents check their bags for goggles that may have been picked up by mistake. One swimmer has lost two pairs including a pink nike pair and the latest were a tinted blue rimmed pair. If any one has found these goggles, please give them to Coach Marta.

Lastly, it is always a good idea to use a lock with your locker and to not leave your things unattended. We share the locker room with UNB students as well as lots of other groups.

Thanks,
Heather

FAST Christmas Party

Hello FAST Families,

The weather is getting cold and winter is approaching, so it is now time to plan
our FAST Christmas Party.   This is a great chance for our swimmers and families to get
together as a group and meet other club members, as well as board members and the
coaching team outside of our pool setting.  Santa Claus will be joining us, as well,
and perhaps taking part in some Karaoke with the kids.

Novice 2 - bagels and muffins
Novice 1 - croissants and sweet breads
AG3 - fruit/fruit trays
AG2,AG1 and National - Breakfast casseroles

This will definitely be a fun party for everyone and a great team building event.

Please let me know by December 5, if you are coming and what you will bring.  That
way we won't have too much of one thing and not enough of another. I can be reached at
459-1974 or email emartin@unb.ca.

Thank you in advance for making this a great party and I look forward to hearing from
everyone.

Please ensure that you leave the deck pool clean after the swim meet. I have to say I was embarrassed at the mess our team left under the bleachers. This is unacceptable. Part of the responsibility as a swimmer is respecting personnel and facilities we are at the swim meets. It is your job to clean up after yourself. Make sure you do your part next time.

Parking at LB Gym

The folks at UNB's L.B. Gym building have asked us to remind our swimmers and their families to please use only proper parking spaces. There have been a number of problems lately with cars parking and blocking other vehicles. The roadside parking spaces will be paved today, and possibly painted as well. They are asking for our cooperation to ensure that roadways are clear to come and go.

DO NOT block the traffic and other parked vehicles. Vehicles in violation of parking regulations will be towed by UNB Security.

Thanks for your support and cooperation.

Parents interested in Strategic Planning

I would like to invite any interested parents from younger groups to develop strategic plan for our club. Getting involved in this process will make you understand what our club is trying to achieve and you'll have a first hand in helping us shape the future for our organization. I think is very important for our club to have a plan like this in place with clear and precise goals. It will make our organization look very professional and more accountable. It can guide us thru the transition process we're in now and will keep us on track. Please let me know if you would like to be a part of this process.

Thank you,

Marta

Sunday Update

Hi Folks,

We have a couple of items to forward to all swimming families...

We are looking for a volunteer to help out with newsletter on monthly basis. Coach Marta would like to have group reports from the coaching staff, upcoming events, results and  general information  included in the newsletter. Someone could put this together with some simple graphics and  pictures into pdf file or another workable format. If you are interested please let us know at this email or you can email Marta directly at swimming@rogers.com.

We also want families to know that practices are cancelled this Friday Evening (Happy Halloween). Afternoon practices are still on.

I have had a clothing update from the folks at Tri-Athlete. We had such a great order that Speedo Canada has to get some from the US. We should be ready to distribute by early November...

Lastly, We are planning to order a small number of silicon swim caps. Silicon Swim Caps are heavier and can last longer than their latex counterparts, however they are also lots more expensive. We are estimating their costs at about $19.00 each. Some folks are allergic to latex and not able to where them, therefore we are ordering silicon ones. Some girls specifically prefer the silicon as they can be easier on long hair...If you are interested in buying one or more, please email me at this address before October 31st...

Thanks and have a great rest of your weekend.

Inspirational Newspaper Story from Coach Marta

Calgary's Cinderella Man

From Wednesday's Globe and Mail

CALGARY — The question was put to Tyler Sloan as he sat in the far corner of the Washington Capitals dressing room, a few stalls to the right of Sergei Fedorov, Alexander Semin and hockey's most dynamic force, Alexander Ovechkin: If someone made a movie out of your career, what would they call it?

Sloan smiled as he undid his skates. Cinderella Man, he replied.

Indeed, his saga is the feel-good story of this early NHL season.

It's the tale of a 27-year-old career minor-leaguer who finally gets his shot in the NHL. Better yet, the hard-luck defenceman gets to debut in his home city against the team he grew up watching, with his mom, dad, older brother and some 40-plus friends in attendance hanging on his every shift.

That's what transpired last night at the Pengrowth Saddledome, when Sloan faced the Calgary Flames in an underdog's tale of patience, perseverance and love for a sister who died eight years ago in a heart-wrenching accident on the Trans-Canada Highway.

Tara Sloan was a five-time national breaststroke champion and a likely member of the Canadian swim team bound for the 2000 Sydney Olympics. She was driving to see her grandmother in Saskatchewan, when her van swerved and rolled several times leaving her with a serious brain injury.

Rocked by grief, Fred and Gayle Sloan made the decision to take their 20-year-old daughter off life support. Her death, at the height of her vitality, had a profound effect on Tyler, who turned 19 less than a week later.

"He was very close to his sister," Fred Sloan said of his youngest son. "When something like that happens it can affect you in different ways and I think he used it as a springboard. He adopted her discipline and drive and her mental focus."

"It just sort of happened," Tyler Sloan said of his transformation. "Swimmers are tremendous athletes. Their work ethic is unparalleled. I saw what it took for her to get there. That was important because I didn't realize what it took to get to this level."

Sloan later came across a journal his sister had kept of all her workouts and wishes. There were lap times, details about nutrition and a list of goals she'd hoped to achieve. He still reads the journal whenever he wants to reflect or simply needs motivation.

"Here's something else you should know about Tyler," said the proud father, who had driven his son's Jeep Cherokee to Hershey, Pa., where Sloan had been playing in the AHL, only to turn around and fly back to Calgary in time for last night's game. "He was never drafted at any level of hockey — not bantam, WHL, NHL, never."

Sloan worked his way up from midget hockey to the Alberta junior league, where he was signed to a contract by the Columbus Blue Jackets. He ended up playing two seasons in the WHL with the Kamloops Blazers, but was mired in the minors when the NHL lockout of 2004-05 ground things to a halt.

"The lockout year I almost gave up a couple of times," he admitted. "I knew I wanted to play hockey. I was in the ECHL for most of the year [a notch below the AHL]. I didn't have a great time or a great coach. A friend of mine was traded to Las Vegas and he said, 'You've got to come here.' I did and I had one of the best years in hockey I've ever had.

"The next thing I knew, I got called up to Hershey and I got a second chance."

With Hershey, Sloan played well enough to help the Bears win the 2006 Calder Cup. Bruce Boudreau was the coach of that team. When he took over behind the Capitals bench, Boudreau encouraged the Capitals to sign Sloan to a free-agent deal.

Sloan was back with the Bears when he was told Sunday his dream had come true; he was headed for the NHL.

"There was wind of it Saturday that the Caps might need some extra bodies for their western road trip but I didn't expect it this early," he said. "I was ecstatic. … You couldn't write it any better. How many guys get to do this, play their first NHL game in their hometown?"

Sloan started the game with defensive partner Jeff Schultz, oddly enough another Calgary native who grew up not far away. But before the puck dropped for the opening faceoff, before he looked up into the crowd hoping to catch a glimpse of his personal cheering section, he thought about everything he'd gone through to make it this far.

Naturally, he thought of his sister and what she'd meant to him, in life and death.

"She was such a good person and an elite athlete that I wanted to be like her," he said. "I wish she was here to witness this but I'm sure she's watching."

Her Cinderella Man of the NHL.

Message from Coach Marta

Hello FAST Swim Families,

It is very important to FAST as a club that we support UNB Swimming. UNB Swimming Varsity Club and their Head Coach Paula Crutcher have been very supportive and helpful to our club. Without their support we wouldn't be able to run our club and be as successful as we are.  UNB swimmers are our coaches, give up their pool time for us to have time trials, run development meets and their Head Coach, Paula Crutcher, is FAST's Technical Director. It is very important for us to maintain close relationship with UNB and we can do so by helping them out with running their swim meet.  It is also great chance for younger swimmers to see and experience fast swimming at a very high level right at home. Please give a couple of hours of your time to support UNB swimming. The sessions are very short and lot's of fun.
Meet Times:  Friday: 7:00pm - 9:00pm
             Saturday:  11:00am - 1:00pm
                        7:00pm - 9:00pm
             Sunday:  11:00am - 1:00pm

Anyone over the age of 13 is able to time.

Also:  If you are a level two officials and are helping this weekend please email me with the dates you are available.

Together we can achieve more.
Thank you for your help.

Citrus Fundraiser

All FAST Members,

The 2008 Citrus and Cookie Dough Fundraising Campaign is officially underway!  The Campaign runs from October 1 through October 31, 2008, with profits from the sale being credited towards the participating swimmer's account.  This is a great fundraising opportunity as the product is very popular.

You will find all information and necessary forms under the "Citrus Sale Information 2008" section on the Parent Info page of the FAST website at:

Several key points taken from the Citrus Sale Information document and worth highlighting are:
·       Each participating member is responsible to download their own customer order forms from the above mentioned website.  The order form document is entitled "Product Order Information 2008".

·       Citrus Pick-up will be November 29, 2008.  The Pick-up location and time will be emailed to everyone in mid November so you can inform your customers.

·       We will only accept cheques from FAST members.  Your customers must either make their purchase cheque payable to you or pay cash.  You are required to compile all your sales onto the "Summary form" and submit a single cheque covering your total sales, payable to FAST.  Once again, each participating member is responsible to download their own Summary Order Form from the above mentioned website location.

If you have any questions, please contact Diane Jeff Foreman at foremanj@nbnet.nb.ca , at (506) 328-4468.

UNB Pool Rules

Hi Folks,

We would like to let our swimmers and their families know about a couple of the Sir Max Aitken Pool's rules...

The women's washroom is for women only. Male children under Kindergarten age ARE allowed to accompany an adult female into the women's washroom. Any male children, kindergarten age and above, must go in the men's washroom. The rules are the same for the men's washrooms. No female children may enter the men's washroom over the age of 5.

If your child has special needs and/or  needs special assistance in getting dressed and is over the age allowed in the washroom, you may ask to use the lifeguards' washroom on deck.

Also, the pool does NOT allowed any photography to be used during practices. This includes flash and video. Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.

Thanks for swimming with FAST.
