Teen Fitness Swimmer wins Mayoral award and is selected to represent Canada at Convention in Poland

Hi Folks,

One of our Teen Fitness swimmer (Taryn McKenzie-Mohr) won Mayor's Enviromental Award.

Fredericton (January 26, 2009) - A Fredericton High School student and a company that specializes in energy efficient and environmentally-friendly products were named the latest winners of the Mayor's Environmental Award.

Taryn McKenzie-Mohr, a 17-year-old, Grade 12 student at Fredericton High School, received the monthly award for December 2008 while Grün-Sol Technologies was presented with the January 2009 award.

Photo of Brad Woodside and Taryn McKenzie-MohrIn December, Ms. McKenzie-Mohr was one of three Frederictonians selected to represent Canada at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Poznan, Poland. There, she was part of a youth delegation poised to influence leaders and make connections with other countries, all in the effort to tackle the challenges brought about by climate change, and encourage government and business to start making a greater effort.

Ms. McKenzie-Mohr is actively involved in both her school in the community, as a member of the Junior Board of CISV Fredericton Chapter, a youth representative on the provincial Citizenship Task Force, an organizer of the Student Vote at FHS, a member of the FHS student council, and a participant in the Model UN program. She was trained last April by Al Gore and The Climate Project Canada to present the former U.S. Vice President's award-winning documentary on global warming "An Inconvenient Truth." One of her goals is to educate and mobilize youth with respect to the climate crisis.

Message from FAST Treasurer - PLEASE READ

FAST STATEMENTS

I have provided FAST families with their statements during the past week.  You are asked to review and advise of any errors or omissions as soon as possible as the statements form the basis of your income tax receipts which will be prepared this weekend.

CASH

Do not send cash for your meet fees, purchase of equipment, clothing, and swim fees.  Please ask your child to place CHEQUES OR MONEY ORDERS ONLY in the FAST mailbox on deck.  If they do not know where it is, please ask a coach to show them where it is or parents can place it there as well.  Without a receipt, it is impossible to trace cash.  If you wish to pay by cash for anything, please communicate with me and I'll make the necessary arrangements to accept it.  DO NOT BRING CHEQUES IT TO THE Fredericton Indoor Pool There is no FAST mailbox at the FIP.

Cheques are to be made payable to FAST.  They can also be sent by mail to FAST, PO Box 82, Station A, Fredericton, NB  E3B 4Y2.

OVERDUE ACCOUNTS

Payments on overdue accounts are due by Friday, January 30th

PLEASE READ OUR POLICY ----------------  IMPORTANT

SWIM FEE POLICY - Effective August 2008

FEES - Fees are based on the operating costs of the club. Full payment of all fees must be received at time of registration. Fees for swimmers registering after the begin date of the program will be pro-rated. No swimmer will be allowed in the pool until such time as payment is received in full.

NSF - All cheques returned by the Bank, for any reason, will be charged $25 per returned item and these funds are due immediately.

CLOTHING ORDERS - Payment in full must be received for clothing orders prior to ordering.

MEET FEES & MEET TRAVEL EXPENSES - payment of meet fees and travel expenses related to either parent meets and team travel meets is required before the swim meet takes place, otherwise swimmers will be ineligible to participate in the meet but will be charged and responsible to pay the full amount of the swim meet as advised by the Meet Manager. All amounts will be communicated to swim families by the Meet Manager prior to the meet.

DELINQUENT ACCOUNTS - Swimmers will be asked to leave the FAST program if accounts remain delinquent for more than 30 days, without exception.  Swimmers wishing to be readmitted to the program may do so in writing to the Board and must submit one payment for the full amount outstanding.

REFUNDS – SWIMMERS LEAVING PROGRAM FOR OTHER THAN MEDICAL REASONS - Swimmers leaving the program may do so after notifying the Registrar in writing. All requests for refunds must be submitted by the 1st of the month, 60 days prior to the swimmer leaving the club (example – notification received December 1, fees will continue to be charged until January 31; notification received December 15, fees will continue to be charged until February 28). No fees will be reimbursed after March 1 of each year therefore all requests for withdrawal from the FAST program must be received on or before January 1. After the swimmer has withdrawn, amounts

outstanding will continued to be withdrawn from cheques in hand until the balance is paid in full. Overpayments will be reimbursed to the swim family.

REFUNDS – SWIMMERS LEAVING PROGRAM FOR MEDICAL REASONS – Should a swimmer be required to leave the program because of medical reasons, the swim family must request a medical certificate from their physician stating the reason for withdrawal, to be given to the FAST Registrar. Once received, the information will be shared with the Board and a majority vote by the Board will

determine a swimmers' eligibility for a refund.  FAST will be happy to accept registrations from swimmers who are able to

return at any time. Please ensure that you contact the Registrar for proper procedures.

REFUNDS – SWIMMERS LEAVING PROGRAM DUE TO RELOCATION Swimmers may also withdraw because of family relocations. Refunds will be pro-rated from the 1st of the month following receipt of notification from the Registrar.

Simon Leslie's Honours Thesis

Hi Folks,

One of UNB student's is looking for parents to volunteer for his thesis. He is specifically looking for children 7-12 years old. His message is belpw and the forms are attached to this email.

Heather

To whom it may concern,

For the parents who have shown interest, and for those who may have interest in their
child's participation in a study on campus with Simon Leslie, please read the
following, and contact me at simon.leslie@unb.ca as soon as possible to arrange an
interview:

My name is Simon Leslie and I am currently working on my honours thesis for
kinesiology.
The study that I am currently working on is focused on the stereotypes that children
have of  physical activity, and how these stereotypes influence a child's understanding
of participation in physically active situations. As one or more of your children are a
part of the FAST program, I would greatly appreciate if one or more of your children
would be willing to participate in the study.

The study involves an interview that will take approximately 15-20 minutes to complete,
and will be located somewhere at the Lady Beaverbrook Gymnasium at an agreed time to
both you and Simon Leslie, the investigator.  If you are interested, please read the
two forms that are attached in the e-mail, and contact me, Simon Leslie, at
simon.leslie@unb.ca to arrange a time that the interview can take place.  To
participate in the study, please make sure to fill in the appropriate information on
the consent form and either give the form to Marta Belsh or Simon Leslie personally
prior to the interviewing process.

If you have any interest in your child's to participation in the study, please feel
free
to contact me at any time.

Thank you,

Swim-A-thon February 6th!

Hello FAST Fishes families,

Mark your calendars! Friday, February 6th is the annual FAST swim-a-thon.  The event
will be from 5:30 to 7:30 PM. Your swimmer's coach will be handing out the swim-a-thon
kits at the beginning of this week. This is a fundraiser, whereby all moneys raised go
back to our club.  This is a great team building event for all FAST swimmers and is sure to
be a fun evening.

The Fishes/Fishes Advanced swimmer who raises the most money will win a large red Speedo swim
back pack, which has been donated from Speedo.

When you pass in your pledge forms the evening of this event, please submit one cheque
per family made payable to FAST for the entire amount.  Anyone, other than a
parent (guardian) of a swimmer, with a donation of $10 or more will be issued a tax
receipt.  Their entire address including the postal code must be on the pledge form for
a receipt to be issued.

The goal of the evening will be to swim as many lengths as possible in the two hours.
We may need some parents on deck to help count lengths.  We will have a potluck snack
table for the kids after the swimming.  I have divided the group into the following:

Breads and Muffins: National and AG1
Bagels and cream cheese, croissants or cinnamon buns: AG 2 and 3
Fruits and yogurt: Novice 1 & 2
Juices: Fishes/Fishes Advanced

All evening and after school practices are cancelled for that day.   It is a great team
building event and the swimmers always have a lot of fun.  See you all there!

Any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Fishes Information

Welcome Fishes!!

On behalf of all our swimmers and parents, we would like to welcome all or new swimmers and all our returning fishes to the pool again this year. We are excited for the next session to start tonight.

We want to give parents a heads up with the practice schedule for this session. Swimmers will be starting tonight, January 8th (Fishes 6:30 PM and Advanced 7:15PM) and ending on March 24th. Practices are cancelled Sunday, Feb 8th and March 1st to 8th (March Break)

All FAST Practices are on for Tonight

All FAST practices will be on tonight at the UNB pool. We look forward to all our fishes starting back again this year.

As a reminder since old man winter is roaring again this year, we wanted to clarify out cancellation plan with everyone. The old plan for practice cancellation coordinating with school closure does not work with our sport. For our older swimmers with an early morning practice, we are in the water before the School Districts have announced their plans.  For all our swimmers, the road and storm conditions are often lovely by afternoon and evening practice time.

The plan for announcing morning practice cancellations is that Marta will post a note on the FAST website latest news section (
http://frederictonaquanauts.blogspot.com/ ) before 5:30 am if the road conditions are such that she is not able to drive to the pool in the morning. For our evening and afternoon pracices, we will also post a note on the blog and usually will also be able to send an email with the cancellations. As always, each parent must use their own discretion with regards to driving in inclement weather to the pool.

Happy Winter,
Heather
