Message from Team Manager

Good morning FAST Families,

This weekend is going to be extremely busy and exciting for all swimmers
attending the FAST Invitational.

A few points that need to be passed on to ensure our meet runs smoothly:

SET UP// TEAR DOWN
I am looking for volunteers to help with the set up on Friday evening at
6:30pm on the pool deck.
Please email managerfast@gmail.com if you are available.
We require tables set up, some moving of heavy items and the touch pads
to be placed in the pool.
I will also require help with the tear down on Sunday evening after the
meet is completed.

I understand it can be a long meet but the more hands to help ensures
everyone can be home at a decent hour.

HOSPITALITY
Please ensure to bring your donated items to the pool Friday evening to
A116 between 6:30-7:30pm. If you are unable to Fri evening please ensure
to drop items off Sat morning when you arrive to Jayne Jones A116
(located behind gym on the main floor of LB Gym Building)
.

OFFICIALS
There are still spots that are required for officials at meet, if you
have not signed up please email Patti Ramsey - pramsey@nbnet.nb.ca

PROGRAMS
FAST will be selling programs in the front lobby for all sessions.  It
will be busiest during warm up sessions on the 1st day of the meet.  I
am looking for a few parents who can help sell programs, direct swimmers
to the change rooms, and direct parents to the viewing area during the
following time slots:
Sat 2:40 - 4:00pm - 1 person
Sun 0745 - 0900 - 1 person
Sun 2:40 - 4:00pm - 1 person

If you have a FAST t-shirt or Red/Black please wear it to support our
swimmers :)) and promote our club.

Please email responses availability to:

managerfast@gmail.com

Thank you

Nancy Corbett

Fishes and Sharks news

Hello everyone!

Just a quick note to let you all know a few things. We'd like to remind you that taking video and/or pictures from the stands is not permitted. There are many factors at work as to why this isn't allowed, but the safety and security of every child on deck is our major concern. I understand that everything can be a camera or a recording device and that most people also use those for other reasons (ie email, games). To avoid anyone feeling uncomfortable, we're going to ask you to keep those devices pointed down in your own lap while the classes are going on.

Also, this coming weekend FAST is hosting one of the first swim meets of the year. There will be teams from all over the province coming to compete and it will run Saturday morning and evening, and Sunday morning and evening. Because of the swim meet however, the Sharks group that swims Saturday will NOT have practice. If you want to come watch, it might be a great opportunity for your little fish to see what they could eventually participate in one day! We'd love to see you there! More information can be found on the website.

Cheers,

Mel

Fwd: Online Official's Clinics

"Everyone, there is an opportunity to do Officials clinics online, at the Ontario Swimming Officials website.

This is a great way to take clinics if you are unable to get to the in class clinics given throughout the year.

To do the online clinics,  you must first create an account if you have not already done so.  This can be done at:  http://www.swimmingofficials.com/registration/Account/Login.aspx

To complete a clinic online go to:  http://education.osoa.ca/

An enrolment key is necessary to complete the clinics. Please contact me to receive the key if you are interested.

Please note that all enrolment keys ARE CASE SENSITIVE.

eg. Timer & Safety Marshall - bathurst and, Stroke & Turns - sackville

The Timer and Safety Marshal should be done first and then the rest can be done in any order.  The evaluations for this position should also be complete before any other evaluations can be accepted.

To complete the certification for Timer and Safety Marshall, the official must work twice as a timer and once as a safety Marshall.  Normally only one evaluation can be done per session, but timer and Safety Marshall can be done at the same session (this is the only exception)

Three evaluations are required for Stroke and Turn, one for stroke, one for turns, and a third for either stroke or turn.

Chief Finish Judge, Recorder/Scorer and Chief Judge Electronics are three clinics but one position for evaluations.  Three evaluations are required for these clinics, one in each.

All the rest require two evaluations.

Referee and Starter are not available online.  The Starter clinic should only be taken after the Stroke and Turn position is fully evaluated.  A Starter must know the stroke rules!

Finally, all club official chairs(that's me) should have administrator status on this site. Meaning that I may need to help activate your account, just let me know if there are any problems. Please be patient as I have found it a bit cumbersome to navigate their system in the past.

Let me know if you have any questions regarding the clinics, or need further enrolment keys.

If you successfully complete a clinic please remember to forward a copy of the certificate to me so I can send it to the NB Officials registrar.

Equipment and gear order from Radical Edge

Hi Folks,

Please see the below note from Mary at Radical Edge....Great timing with our meet this weekend...Swimmers will look great in their new gear!!!!

Heather

Finally we have everything in store except boys jammers size 24 and snorkels.  I've talked with Speedo and the jammers will be shipped this week and they are expecting the snorkels by the second week in Nov.

Could you let the parents/kids know that they can pick up anytime. If they have already picked up part of their order, could they bring their order sheet with them.  It just makes is easier for us to allocate.

Thanks,
Mary

Swim-a-thon

Hi Everyone,

What a great weekend with our in-house time trial and the university Amby Legere Invitational! I saw some wonderful swimming this past weekend!

As you know, our swim-a-thon will be held this coming weekend on Saturday morning, October 27 at 6:30am.  I am looking forward to seeing all of our swimmers out once again and all together to have fun and get in lots of swimming.  This is a long swim for our children and they will need sustenance so I am asking parents to bring some food and drink in. Please see below to find out what your swimmer's group is responsible for.

Also, please be sure to bring in your pledge forms, ONE CHEQUE made out to FAST that covers the total amount raised LESS the $60 that you have already paid at registration. I will be down on deck collecting money, pledge forms and food. If anyone would like to help out with the food or counting money I could certainly use this kind of help.

Thank you to all of you for your help. These events would not happen without the support of our parents.

Sincerely,

Cheryll Penney

For those options that have choices, please just bring in one option. I just wanted a variety of items. Eg fruit tray OR bananas OR apples etc. For the bagels you can bring bagels with cream cheese or butter or margarine.

Novice 1, 2, 3 -Drinking boxes

AG 2 & 3 – Muffins/croissants/other breakfast items

AG 1 and Senior 2 - Fruit tray/bananas/apples/oranges

Senior 1 - Bagels/Cream cheese/Butter/Margarine

Pitney Bowes NB Sports Awards

The nomination committee had their work cut out for them as there were many deserving candidates in each category. That being said I am pleased to inform you that the following individuals are finalists:

Cassidy Richards – Comfort Inn Female Athlete of the Year
Alex MacDonald – Male Coach of the Year
Lauren Adam – Spirit of Sport
Lauren Adam – President's Award (Female)
Alex Horwood – President's Award (Male)
The Pitney Bowes Awards recognize the accomplishments of New Brunswick's greatest athletes, teams, coaches, officials, and volunteers in amateur sport over the past year.

"Over the past year each of these nominees has done New Brunswick very proud," said McKillop. "These are the types of people who inspire others to be great, and help see the value in sport participation. New Brunswickers can be very proud of these individuals".

FAST wishes all finalists best of luck and we'll be cheering you on.

Nb Liquor fundraiser

    To FAST Parents:

Our first fundraiser of the year will be at the Nb Liquor store on Prospect St. November 8th, 9th and 10th. This is a
great opportunity for FAST families to raise money directly for their own child. Ninety-five percent of the funds collected
will go towards your child's account. Each time slot can have a maximum of two families and each family can sign up for
one slot. If demand is low a family can participate in more than one slot.

    The time slots are: Thurs Nov 8th 4:00 - 6:30 and 6:30 - 9:00
                      Friday Nov 9th 4:00 - 6:30 and 6:30 - 9:00

Kids must wear their FAST Jacket and at least one adult must be present during each time slot.
Slots will be given out on a first come first serve basis. Interested parents can contact me at Chrisgoodyear@rogers.com.

FAST Invitational Nov 3rd & 4th, 2012

"Thank you to all those who helped out with the Time Trial and Amby meet this weekend, what a great show of support.

We are now soliciting maximum parental participation for our biggest meet of the season.

The FAST Invitational Meet, November 3rd and 4th, will have four sessions. Sessions are expected to last 4 hours.

And, we need 35 people per session to help officiate. You do not need to have any experience to be a Timekeeper. We hold a short training session 30 minutes before the session starts. Helping officiate is the best seat in the house, and the only way to be on deck with the swimmers.

I would request that officials present to the Official's room(I will put up signs) for the following times;

Session #1 - Sat., Nov 3 - 8:15 am

Session #2 - Sat., Nov 3 - 3:30 pm

Session #3 - Sun., Nov 4 - 8:15 am

Session #4 - Sun., Nov 4 - 3:30 pm

Please consider helping out to ensure a successful meet for our swimmers.

Let me know as soon as you are able which sessions you are able to work. As well, please feel free to contact me with any questions.

Thanks,

FAST Dry land

Swimmers and Parents,

A quick note of clarification regarding the FAST dry land program. At the moment, we have logistic issues and dry land program is suspended for the time being. We are working on number of opportunities and different approaches, however it takes time to organize it. We are looking after 8 different groups of swimmers and fitness levels and it is a somewhat complicated and challenging process. We are strong advocates for having dry land program as part of our training and we are working on the issue to resolve it as soon as possible.

The only dry land program available at the moment is for selected swimmers who are Canada Games potential and I have been in touch with those swimmers on individual bases.

If you have any questions or need clarification please ask the coaching staff directly.

Thank you for your attention and we apologize for any inconvenience,

Marta

Fishes and Sharks news

Hello everyone!

I just wanted to send out a quick note about how things are going with the program thus far! I'm really pleased with how hard everyone is working and I'm seeing some real improvement from the kids. KEEP IT UP! Right now we're still working on developing general skills for each stroke and basic endurance. You might see us working hard on our kick, and that's because having a strong kick helps keep a good body position in the water, which in turn helps them have better, more efficient strokes.

I do have an announcement for the Fishes 2 and 3 classes that run Mondays and Fridays from 5:30-6:15. There will be NO class this coming Friday, October 19th because the UNB varsity reds have a swim meet that day and have booked the pool. Now because they also had Thanksgiving Monday where they missed a class, we will be adding on an extra week at the end of the session for only the Monday/Friday classes.

That's it from me, I hope the kids are having as much fun as we are and if you have any concerns, as always, don't hesitate to ask!!

See you at the pool!

Important Events: FAST Swim-A-Thon & Parents Info Blitz - Saturday October 27

FAST Swimmers & Parents,

Thank you for taking a few minutes to read this entire communication as there are important items contained herein.

What, Where & When:
The annual FAST Swim-A-Thon is coming right up.  It will be held at the UNB Pool on Saturday morning, October 27th from 6:30am - 8:30am.  In this 2-hour timeframe swimmers swim as many laps as they can (maximum of 200 lengths of the pool as determined by Swimming Canada).

About:
The Swim-A-Thon is a FAST team building and team spirit event and is part of a national program sponsored by Swimming Canada to assist swim clubs in raising money to support their own club.  Please recall that during registration you paid a mandatory $60 fee (per family) as your basic Swim-A-Thon contribution.  At that time you also received your Swim-A-Thon package.  If you haven't looked at it yet, it is time to dig it out and read the information!  It is important to remember that you can recoup the $60 mandatory fee by encouraging your child to get sponsors for their Swim-A-Thon ($10 from 6 friends and family members should be quite do-able).  Swimmers can get sponsors to pledge them a lump sum or an amount per length they swim.

We also encourage swimmers to get sponsors over and above the $60,  as this money will go right back into the FAST swim club which helps immensely to keep our club thriving and sustainable by contributing to our yearly expenses and operating costs.  This is an important fundraiser for our club so very much encourage our swimmers to do their best to support it!

Important things to know about the FUNDRAISING/SPONSOR aspect of the event:

1.  If you recoup the $60 (i.e. get $60 from sponsors) you DO NOT bring in this money as you already paid the $60.  You simply come and participate in the event by swimming as many laps as you can in 2 hours.
2.  If you choose not to recoup the $60, again, swimmers then just come and participate in this team building event.
3.  If you raise over and above the $60 from various sponsors, you DO bring in this amount.  BUT it must be brought in in the form of one total cheque from you payable to FAST (or Fredericton Aquanauts Swim Club).
4.  If you have received any monies from sponsors, please ensure that you bring your completed Swim-A-Thon package with you, with sponsor names and addresses clearly printed so they can receive their tax receipt.
5. NO CASH, please, 1 check per family for all money collected, check should be made out to FAST.

Important things to know about the SWIMMING aspect of the event:

1.  Each swimmer should have one parent present to count their laps
2.  Each swimmer should have a water bottle for hydration during the event
3.  There will be juice and breakfast food provided for the swimmers after the event (Event Organizer Cheryll Penney will be sending a separate request for food donations)
4.  Swimmers can various strokes, flutter boards and pull-buoys to break up their time in the pool

PARENT INFO BLITZ
Following the Swim-A-Thon there will be a Parents Info Blitz from 8:30-9:30am in Room A116, where our FAST coaches and Board members will be present to speak about some key club information that you will want to know and also chat with you and answer questions, etc.  So please come to:

1.  Get to know your Board and Coaches and help us get to know you
2.  Learn about the FAST swim club and get some helpful tips on navigating this world of swim meets, swim times, swim events, volunteering to help your club, etc.
3.  Bring your questions and get some answers

This is an important day for FAST and we look forward to spending some fun time with our swimmers and their parents!
