Notes from the camp

Notes from the Tri-Meet and Camp-Halifax, NS, Jan 19-20, 2013

Selected group of swimmers from around the province took part in camp and meet this past weekend that saw teams from NS, PEI and NB. We had 6 swimmers from FAST team who took part in this event-Alexie Sanford, Chloe Thibodeau, Kelsea Vessey, Duncan Burns, Noah Horwoood, Max Thibodeau, Alexander MacDonald and Marta Belsh helped out on the coaching side and Nancy Corbett, Marie-Line Thibodeau and Rejean Thibodeau acted as chaperones.
The camp portion usually is designed around stations where all swimmers from all 3 provinces are mixed up and work together with coaches. This year the focus was on dives and reaction times, turn index (how fast are your turns), dolphin kick - high frequency and tempo, IM swim set-no rest on any of the strokes.
My feedback to all swimmers is this-embrace basic skills like streamlines, kick, turns, etc. Learn to do them correctly and make sure that every time the execution of that skills is perfect. Race is nothing else but a combination of basic skills bundled up together. Any basic skill that you can do better then your opponent will help you get faster time or win a race.
Often swimmers (including parents) will make comment we do not work on turns. Let me remind you that almost every time you get to the wall you do need to make a turn. This is your perfect opportunity to practice any turn. If you do it sloppy and with no attention to detail then unfortunately you've lost the opportunity to become better. Here is an example set from a practice that many of you have done it before 6x100 IM on 2:00 desc 1-3. In this set you have a chance to work on 18 turns, 6 finishes and 24 streamlines off the wall. All in the span of 12 minutes. A lot of work and we only discussing wall skills. Are you up to it? are you paying attention to where your head is on the approach to wall? or if you are turning straight over rather then to the side?, or is your underwater kick fast and strong enough?I could go on for few minutes coming up with things that can be worked on during the turn. If you have trouble to come up with ideas ask your coach but then work on those pointed out items not only when he/she is looking at you. More importantly when they are not looking. Remember when you are in the race it is you in between the 2 lanes performing those skills, not your coach. So it really does not matter how many times we repeat to you what you need to do if you not paying attention in the first place. Listen then perform. Give yourself time to understand the required skill and time to properly execute it. Incorporate as many senses as possible. How does it feel? what do you hear? what do you see? Learn to read all senses for greater understanding and smooth execution.
Everyone wants to be fast, it is a fact. Speed comes from fluent execution of skills and ability to transfer from one to another. With the meet coming up next week you have a perfect opportunity to put polishing touches to your skills.
The meet last weekend was also good chance for us to see how we fair up against other 2 provinces. The encouraging news are that we are getting closer to NS who is leading in Martitimes. We won some events and number of relays. I'm sure if we keep working hard and be smart we will close that gap soon.

Happy swimming....

Marta

Fwd: Parents/Officials needed FAST Prem Feb 9th

Hey folks, we are hosting a Premier Swim Meet Saturday, February 9th and are in need of officials.

This is a one session meet.

Warm-up starts at 1:00 pm - and, I would ask all officials to be in the Official's rm at this time.

The meet will be at the UNB pool.

For all those parents who have swimmers participating, we need your help to make this a successful meet. You do not need to have had any experience to be a Timekeeper. There will be an orientation on how to be a Timekeeper prior to the session starting.

(FYI, there is a Level 1 Timekeeper clinic occurring this Saturday, January 12th 8:30-1000 in rm C210 at UNB Gym)

We are also in need of Level 2 and above officials.

Even if your child is not swimming, please consider coming to lend a hand.

Please let me know directly of your availability to help out.

Any questions, feel free to contact me.

Thanks,

Official's Clinic Day - Jan 12th

I hope everyone has had a wonderfully peaceful Holiday!

I am proud to announce our second Clinic Day for this swimming season. It will take place in room C210, at UNB Gym, Saturday, January 12th.

Clinics and times;

Level 1, Timekeeper/Safety Marshal 0830-1000

Level 2, Stroke and Turn 1000-1130

Level 2, Chief Timekeeper 1130-1230

Brown bag lunch 1230-1300

Level 2, Clerk of Course 1300-1400

Level 2, Recorder Scorer/Chief Finish Judge/Chief Judge Electronics 1400-1530

Level 2, Starter 1530-1700

Do not feel that you need to take all these clinics. If you have never taken a clinic before, start by only taking the Level 1.

If you have your Level 1 clinic, the next to take is the Stroke and Turn.

Once you have your Stroke and Turn clinic, you can take any, or all of the other Level 2 clinics.

The start times for the clinics above will be adhered to in order to allow people to show up for the clinics that they need, or desire to take.

I am requesting people please RSVP by Jan 10th, with the clinic(s) you are planning to take.

Prior to attending please read the necessary clinic material, and download and bring with you the clinic questionnaire(s) - found by following links to "Clinic Materials" and "Questionnaires" at http://www.swimnb.ca/officialsinfo.html (for the Level 1 clinic, find it under "Introduction")
