Swim a thon Update

Hi Folks,

The Fast Swimathon is this Sunday, October 16th.. We have lots of great prizes that should encourage our swimmers to raise lots of money. The swim a thon will take place at the Sir Max Aiken Pool on Sunday from 3pm until 5 pm. We ask that swimmers be on deck at 2:30pm for our long course awards ceremony. We need parent volunteers to help count the laps and serve the snacks. If your child is swimming, we ask that one parent come to count his or her laps. 200 laps is hard to keep track of, especially for our younger swimmers.

We wanted to remind our returning swimmers and explain to our new swimmers how to bring in your forms and money. You have already paid your first $60 as part of your registration money. We ask that you calculate your swimmers total moneys raised, subtract the $60 you already paid and write one cheque for the difference. For example, let's say Alex raised $165, I subtract my $60 paid at registration and write my cheque for $105 to FAST. No cash please,,,,This is usually confusing, so if you still have questions please email me your concerns. Please remember to fill out the affidavit and include it, your pledge sheets and your money.

As usual, we ask that parents assist us by providing snacks. We ask that the Novice groups all bring fruit or cheese crackers. The Age Groups to bring cookies or muffins, and the senior groups to please bring juice boxes or water.

If you need more forms, please see Marta.

Thanks,

Heather

Swim a thon Update

Hi Folks,

We wanted to remind everyone that the Swim A thon is less than two weeks away. We have lots of really great prizes this year. We hope that you will share the prize list with your swimmers to encourage them to get lots of sponsors. We hope to raise enough money that this will be our only mandatory fundraiser for the year.Unfortunately if we do not raise enough money, we will have to do other fundraisers later this year. Please note that the fundraiser is only mandatory for Novice Groups, Age Groups and Senior Groups. Fishes and Fishes Advances are not required to participate (although they are welcome to, if they would like to).

The Swim a thon will be at the UNB pool on Sunday, October 16th. If you need more forms, please see Marta or Monique Pelletier...A more detailed email with times, snacks and payments will follow later this week...

Thanks,

Heather

Swim Parent News, "When the Coach Is Not At Practice

=====================================================================
When The Coach Is Not At Practice
Guy Edson, ASCA Staff

There are occasional times when the head coach of a group of swimmers or the head coach of the whole team cannot be a practice.  They may be at swim meet with one group of swimmers, or they may be at a clinic, or they may simply need the time off for personal business – it's rare, but it does happen.  When it does happen there may be some small disturbances such as an assistant coach filling in, usually with a workout the head coach wrote, and maybe there is an adjustment of lanes and a consolidation of groups to make the practice manageable.  The question is, how do our athletes respond to the workout when their primary coach is not there and how do parents respond to their children's responses.

What usually happens?  The athletes, particularly the advanced age groupers and the seniors also take the day off.  They may be at practice in body but they simply do not perform in the same way they would if the head coach were there.  There is nothing new about this -- it's been around a long time.  We know it as the "substitute teacher syndrome."  Chances are, you've "taken a day off" also because the teacher or the coach or the boss was not there that day.

Ideally, what should happen?

Athletes should be taking personal responsibility for their performance.  They should not be swimming to please Mom and Dad.  They should not be swimming to please the coach.  They SHOULD be swimming for themselves and their team.  John Leonard has often said, "Honor your teammates with your efforts."

I ask my swimmers, "Do you want me to make you great?"  Often times they are hesitant to answer thinking it is a trick question and they're right!  Because the answer is "I cannot make you great.  I cannot make you be anything.  When you become a craftsman of your own strokes, turns, and finishes;  when you perform at the best of your ability on every swim; then YOU are working toward greatness.  You walked in that door an athlete of a certain ability.  When you walk out the door at the end of practice you can be a better athlete through your own efforts.  Are you faster?  Did you improve your turns?  Did you listen to the stroke and turn reminders?"

And when an athlete becomes a true owner of his or her own progress they WILL perform even if their primary coach is not there that day.

What response is appropriate from the parent when the child complains that the coach was not there?  Answer:  see the above paragraphs.  Don't encourage a victim mentality.  Ask the same questions presented above.  Let your child know that they alone are responsible for making it a great workout regardless of who is running the workout.

Fishes Update

Dear Parents and Swimmers,

We successfully finished first week of lessons. We have made few changes to groups and coaches. Please check the table below for updated groups.
In the next 2 weeks we will be working on number of different skills both new and refining old ones. Since we are working in different environment number of skills will be first introduced on deck side to give swimmers chance to recognize the correct movement. Please remind children to use washroom before the start of practice.
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us swimming@rogers.com

Fredericton City Pool User Survey

fast_header4.jpg

Hi Folks,

I am sending the link to the City of Fredericton's survey to determine whether we need an additional pool in our city. As many of you are already aware our current pool is older and will need to be replaced in the future. The city commissioned a consultant to analyze the needs of our city for more pool space. This survey is part of her analysis.

Please follow the link and provide them with your feedback.

Wouldn't it be great if our city could have one of those fabulous facilities that could host Nationals, Easterns or even Provincials. A 50 meter pool would provide our city with the ability to host those larger meets as well as provide us with two 25 meter pools for the day to day use when the bulkhead is moved to the middle. We would be able to have many groups in the water at the same time.

Thank you for your time and please help us rally support for a new pool by answering this short survey.

Heather
