Sharing Good news about our Fast Parent

Sent: Thursday, October 13, 2011 8:22:22 PM
Subject: Swimming New Brunswick Executive Director

We are pleased to announce that Swimming New Brunswick has completed the hiring process and Pat Ketterling will be joining our team as Executive Director. As many of you are familiar with Pat's background in our swimming community Pat brings with her experience on many levels. An athlete, club board member, level 3 official, meet planning and management, two (2) years interim Swimming NB Executive Director Pat will bring various skills and experience to the role that will help to manage our SNB initiatives and commitments to our membership. For the past year Pat has been employed as the Executive Director of Skate NB and in doing so has gained more experience working with event planning, website management and communicating/liaising with close to 40 skating clubs in all communities in both languages in New Brunswick. Recognizing some important commitments to her current employer Pat's official start date will be November 8th. I would like to extend thanks to the members of the Executive who assisted with this process which involved screening resumes, narrowing down the pool of potential applicants for interviews (which consisted of 5 interviews) and finally selecting the appropriate candidate.

WVST October 15th Meet: Invitation to 134 Connell Street between Sessions

We want to invite all FAST swimmers and their families to our house between sessions on Saturday.  Our intent is to provide a destination to put in the time.  We are located at:

134 Connell Street (on the corner of Connell and Green Streets) Woodstock

Our house is located close to the downtown, with Pizza Delight just a 30 second walk away and Tim Horton's a 2 minute walk away.

Since one the key Foreman expects to officiate both sessions, we are unable to coordinate things to provide much more than limited refreshments.  However, individuals are more than welcome to bring your own lunch or come to the house after eating.  We suggest parking on Green Street or in the parking lot across from Pizza Delight (afterall Pizza Delight is just 30 seconds away).

Good Luck to all on Saturday!

Best Regards,
The Foremans
(Jeff, Diane, Teague, and Kyle)

Help with meets needed

Dear Parents,

We are sending a call for help as we are looking for 2 people to become meet manager to help us organize couple of meets in November and we need 2 people as computer operator. Previous experience is not necessary just willingness to help us out. If you are a level 2 official and looking to advance in your level then this is great opportunity to move ahead. We have couple parents who have done it for long time and/or not currently with the club who are willing to help to mentor you thru the process.  They will be a great asset and will make the process a lot easier.
The situation is urgent as we need to get sanction and approval to run meets and the deadline is October 31.
Please consider to step into the position of meet manager or computer operator.

Invitational Meet November 19-20, 2011 (Saturday, Sunday)
Regional High School meet November 25, 2011 (Friday only)
10 and under meet, March 31, 2012 (Saturday)

Thank you in advance,

Marta

Swim a thon Update

Hi Folks,

The Fast Swimathon is this Sunday, October 16th.. We have lots of great prizes that should encourage our swimmers to raise lots of money. The swim a thon will take place at the Sir Max Aiken Pool on Sunday from 3pm until 5 pm. We ask that swimmers be on deck at 2:30pm for our long course awards ceremony. We need parent volunteers to help count the laps and serve the snacks. If your child is swimming, we ask that one parent come to count his or her laps. 200 laps is hard to keep track of, especially for our younger swimmers.

We wanted to remind our returning swimmers and explain to our new swimmers how to bring in your forms and money. You have already paid your first $60 as part of your registration money. We ask that you calculate your swimmers total moneys raised, subtract the $60 you already paid and write one cheque for the difference. For example, let's say Alex raised $165, I subtract my $60 paid at registration and write my cheque for $105 to FAST. No cash please,,,,This is usually confusing, so if you still have questions please email me your concerns. Please remember to fill out the affidavit and include it, your pledge sheets and your money.

As usual, we ask that parents assist us by providing snacks. We ask that the Novice groups all bring fruit or cheese crackers. The Age Groups to bring cookies or muffins, and the senior groups to please bring juice boxes or water.

If you need more forms, please see Marta.

Thanks,

Heather

Goal Thinking Versus Process Thinking - Swim Parent Newsletter

Goal Thinking Versus Process Thinking
John Leonard

I would like to encourage parents to think about the mindset of their children as they approach the starting blocks before an event.

It is common at swim meets for children to ask their coach things like, "What do you think I can go in this 100 free?" or, "My goal is to go 1:05", etc. etc. etc..

In short, GOAL THINKING, or otherwise sometimes described as "outcome thinking."

Now, that's not a bad thing. But it is NOT what they should be thinking about as they get ready to swim!

Instead, the swimmer should be asking the coach, "What do I need to be doing to go 1:05 in the 100 free?"

And the answer would be something like this:  "Breath every 5 on the 1st 25 and every 3 strokes the rest of the way.  Take two strokes out of every wall before you breathe, and pick up your arm tempo on the 3rd 25 and your legs on the last 25".

(For a younger swimmer, the answer would be something more simple like, "Breathe every three and let me see good strong kicking on the last lap!"

That's called PROCESS thinking.

PROCESS THINKING is what helps the child focus on and remember what they need to be DOING when they swim.   That's what helps them to go fast.

Heading for the blocks repeating their GOAL over and over in their your head will result in.....nothing.

Goals and goal thinking/outcome thinking is what gets them out of bed on Monday morning to go to practice after a long rainy weekend.  It's what gets them to go to practice when their friends who are non-swimming slugs are going to the mall or sitting on their couch watching TV.  Therefore, goal thinking is IMPORTANT.

But at the meet, we need focused, PROCESS THINKING to get better.

Parents, I am sure you already understand all this, so please help us teach it to all your children.

Swim a thon Update

Hi Folks,

We wanted to remind everyone that the Swim A thon is less than two weeks away. We have lots of really great prizes this year. We hope that you will share the prize list with your swimmers to encourage them to get lots of sponsors. We hope to raise enough money that this will be our only mandatory fundraiser for the year.Unfortunately if we do not raise enough money, we will have to do other fundraisers later this year. Please note that the fundraiser is only mandatory for Novice Groups, Age Groups and Senior Groups. Fishes and Fishes Advances are not required to participate (although they are welcome to, if they would like to).

The Swim a thon will be at the UNB pool on Sunday, October 16th. If you need more forms, please see Marta or Monique Pelletier...A more detailed email with times, snacks and payments will follow later this week...

Thanks,

Heather
