Fishes and Advanced Update

 Swimmer and Parents,

Quick note on the progress swimmers are making in the water.
All groups are hard at work. The drills(specific exercise to help develop skill) are progressively getting harder as the swimmers become more comfortable in the water. You may see your swimmer doing a lot of kicking exercises.  In swimming  contrary to the popular believe most of the power comes from body position and not from arm strength. The more stable body position on the water the faster and more efficient swimmer can move thru the water. To keep flat body position on the water we use core and leg strength. To develop strength an power in those areas we use a lot of kicking drills and sets in various positions and/or with different equipment.

On Oct 25th we'll have Parents day on pool deck-all parents are invited on pool deck and talk to the group coach during last 15 min of practice.

We love seeing all the swimmers on the pool deck.

Pre and Post Race Conversations with The Athlete
by John Leonard

If you've been to swim meets, you will have noticed that both before a race and immediately after a race, the coach speaks with your child. This is an important part of the race experience.

Before the race, the purpose is to remind the child of the singular thing that  the coach wants the child to concentrate on in that race.

Or, in the words of famous Coach Confucius, "He who chases two rabbits, catches neither."  The purpose of the coach's communication with your child is to make sure they are focused only on the item that the coach has chosen for that race. (This is based on what we've been doing in practice.)  The reason we practice, of course, is to prepare to race.

Post Race, the coach wants to meet IMMEDIATELY with the athlete once they get out of the water to discuss with the athlete if they achieved that singular goal.  Did they do what they set out to do?  If so, "great, good job!" If not, why not?  Or if the athlete can't remember what they were supposed to do, that's not a good and back to the drawing board in learning how to concentrate!

Both communications are critically important in the development of the athlete.

If a parent wants to know what the child is supposed to be concentrating on in any particular race, ASK THE COACH! We'll be happy to tell you. You might check afterwards and see if your child also remembered, post race, what we said about it.  Then you can reinforce the need to focus and learn.

Online clinics

We now have the ability to do more online clinics through the Swim Ontario Officials site – http://www.osoa.ca

The clinics that can be taken online include the Level I and all the Level 2 clinics, including Meet Manager.

The enrolment keywords will be made available upon request.

I would encourage people to check these out.

Despite the availability of the clinics online, I will still be trying to arrange several classroom clinics for those who would prefer this type of learning.

Cheers,

Parents of children newly competing at meets

Hi Folks,

I am forwarding a note from Patti Ramsey on Begenning to Officiate....

Heather

Note from Coach Dom

Hello all Novice 1 parents and swimmers,

I just wanted to take the time to email everyone to introduce myself and touch base with each and everyone of  you. To start off my name is Dominique Legault-Moore (a.k.a. Dom) if I haven't had the chance to speak with you yet. To give you a little back ground on myself I will make it short and sweet:

- Coached with FAST for part of the 2008-2009 season and all of the 2009-2010, 2010-2011 seasons
- Was the coach of Novice 1 and Age - Group 3
- Took a year off last year to focus on finishing my masters in Kinesiology here at UNB
- I also have an undergraduate in Kin
- Was Varsity Swimmer for 5 years
- Co-team captain for 2
- Provincial swimmer in Ottawa for 10 years

Now that you know my back ground, I want to start off by saying how excited I am to be back and how fortunate I am to have such a fantastic group of swimmers. I know that we will have lots of fun, great practices (which includes hard ones!) and fast swims. As a swim coach I like to stay connected with all the parents. It is obviously hard to do so when I'm on deck and all of you parents are subject to the hot stands above. So the best way to do so is via email, I invite all of you to drop me a line (at fastcoach.dom@gmail.com) whenever you have a question, comment or concern. I will also have extra time to chat in person after Saturday morning practices. This will help me get to know all of you and the swimmers better, and also ensures everyone is on the same page.

As for what we have been up too in the pool lately. The focus of the next month or two will be the following:
- get the swimmers comfortable with my terms and drills
- focus on stroke technique though drills
- working on turns and starts

So far things have been going great in the pool, the swimmers are already making improvements in their strokes. I also have to state just how proud I am of all the swimmers and their efforts during Swim-a-thon yesterday. You are all troopers! Not everyone can swim for two hours straight. Just image running for two hours. Congrates to all of you!

I think that covers everything for now. Next up, Oromocto for our first swim meet! Keep your eyes and ears tuned in for more details.

All the best,
Coach Dom

Reminder to fill out an aquatic feasibility study

Dear Parents and Swimmers,
As members of FAST it is very important that our voice be heard, as our club would be one of the pool's primary users. Thus, the City needs to hear from us in large numbers that a new facility is very necessary and will be supported and embraced; and is a crucial part of the future growth and development of a vibrant swimming community in Fredericton.
Please take few minutes to fill out the survey and encourage your friends and family to participate as well. Survey about the new pool facility ends this Friday. Please follow the link to the survey site http://www.fredericton.ca/fr/recleisure/2011PoolFeasibilitySurvey.asp

Thank you for your consideration,

Marta
